The Right Buyer Agent

Selecting the right buyer agent is critical to home buying. Having the right person represent you in a real estate transaction can save you time, money and hassle. Having a successful, pleasant experience in the home buying process is worth the effort to find the right person. There are several key aspects to consider when searching for the right buyer agent:

Buyer agent experience: While number of years of experience is valuable, it is also of value how an agent has been trained. If someone with less experience has been trained well in buyer agency, they may be more qualified than an experienced agent who has worked mostly with sellers.

Knowing the market: It is important to find a buyer agent who knows the whole market area, not just a specialized neighborhood or section. If you are moving from out-of-town, you want, first, to narrow your search down to an area of town. Having a buyer agent with knowledge of all areas will prevent being pushed to an area a less knowledgeable agent feels more at home showing, or explaining.

Dedicated to finding the best home: You want to find someone who is not anxious to get you to decide after showing a couple of homes; you want someone dedicated to the concept of buy agency, patient, and objective. You want a buyer agent who will research and present pertinent, reliable information so that you can make a wise, informed decision.

Integrity: This is difficult to determine, but sometimes you get a feel. You can also request references from past clients. Integrity allows you to trust the buyer agent with confidential information, and to feel safe knowing you are being represented by someone who has your best interests in mind and will not violate your trust.

There are other criteria, and I will post them in a follow-up post in a few days.
