Savannah, Ga. Real Estate Series: Ardsley Park

downtown2-1 024.jpg   If I had to pick three of my favorite neighborhoods in Savannah, Ga., Ardsley Park would be one of them. It's difficult to describe the neighborhood because it's eclectic, but I'll try. One thing I like is the trees and shrubbery, especially this time of year when the azaleas are blooming. Ardsley Park is an old, mature neighborhood, and was Savannah's first "subdivision" -- calling it a subdivision sounds strange because it's so unlike modern developments.

Ardsley Park proper was once limited to a few streets south of Victory Drive but now most people consider the neighborhood to be from Victory to Derenne, north to south, and Waters to Bull, east to west. Homes were built from the early 20th century to a little beyond the mid 20th century. Many of the homes have been renovated and the quality of the renovations vary -- some are top-notch renovations and some are amatuer make-overs.

The allure of Ardsley Park is the old-style neighborhood feel and the variety of home styles: from Colonial Revival to Neoclassical to Tudor to Arts and Crafts with many bungalow styles.

Another attraction of Ardsly Park is it's central location -- 5 minutes to downtown Savannah, 20 minutes to Tybee Island Beach, 5 minutes to the southside and close proximity to the interstate I16. No mater where you want to go in Savannah, Ardsley is located for easy access. there are only a few busy roads going through Ardsley and th rest are travelled slowly with many stop signs to slow the traffic.

There is a commercial spot on Habersham with shops, grocery store, liquor store an three restaurants. But, like I wrote, it's only five minutes to all the shopping downtown Savannah or soutside Savannah.

The home prices have risen fairly sharply in the last 10 to 15 years with the last 2 years showing a marked slowdown. Prices range from the 100s to over a million, so there is something for everyone -- however, most homes in decent condition will run close to $300,000 and over. Right next to Ardsley Park on the northeast end is Daffin Park, with a picnic area, tennis courts and ballfields. The minor league baseball team, The Sandgnats, play at Grayson Stadium which is in Daffin Park.
